青春常在 feeling of youth
no young man believes he shall ever die. it was a saying of my brother's, and a fine one. there is a feeling of eternity in youth, which makes us amend for everything. to be young is to be as one of the immortal gods. one half of time indeed is flown-the other half remains in store for us with all its countletreasures; for there is no line drawn, and we see no limit to our hopes and wishes. we make the coming age our own-
the vast, the unbounded prospect lies before us.
death. old age. are words without a meaning. that paby us like the idea air which we regard not. others may have undergone, or may still be liable to them-we "bear a charmed life“, which laughs to scorn all such sickly fancies. as in setting out on delightful journey, we strain our eager gaze forward-
bidding the lovely scenes at distance hail!
and see no end to the landscape, new objects presenting themselves as we advance; so, in the commencement of life, we set no bounds to our inclinations. nor to the unrestricted opportunities of gratifying them. we have as yet found no obstacle, no disposition to flag; and it seems that we can go on so forever. we look round in a new world, full of life, and motion, and ceaseleprogress; and feel in ourselves all the vigor and spirit to keep pace with it, and do not foresee from any present symptoms how we shall be left behind in the natural course of things, decline into old age, and drop into the grave. it is the simplicity, and as it were abstractedneof our feelings in youth, that (so to speak) identifies us with nature, and (our experience being slight and our passions strong) deludes us into a belief of being immortal like it. our short-lives connection with existence we fondly flatter ourselves, is an indissoluble and lasting union-a honeymoon that knows neither coldness, jar, nor separation. as infants smile and sleep, we are rocked in the cradle of our wayward fancies, and lulled into security by the roar of the universe around us0we quaff the cup of life with eager haste without draining it, instead of which it only overflows the more-objects prearound us, filling the mind with their magnitude and with the strong of desires that wait upon them, so that we have no room for the thoughts of death.
Dear judges, ladies and gentlemen, good morning. My name is WangXun, and I’m from school of economics and management. Descartes once said: thereading of all good books is like a conversation with the finest men of past centuries. Reading, as a best way to gain knowledge, has earned good popularity over the past centuries. With the development of science and technology, nowadays we may have more choices, like traditional reading and online reading. Were it left to me to choose books reading or online reading, I would not hesitate a moment to choose the latter. As far as I am concerned, online reading is far more convenient than books reading. Here I have several reasons.
First of all, online reading save me much time and money. Thanks to the development of the internet and the wide use of personal computers, I can have access to almost any book I want without spending much money. As I know, most websites providing online reading are free of charge, while some of them do ask for a little money. But that is nothing compared with that spent on traditional books. Then, I will not have to walk half an hour to a book store or library, especially in a hot summer day. All I have to do is to open my laptop and type in the book name or key words, then the system will list relevant information on the screen At the same time, I can read remarks from other readers to see whether the book suits me well.
Secondly, online reading provides me more personal alternatives. For example, I can choose the background, font size and color at random. If you are bored with the black and white, why not try something attractive. Like I said, more personal alternatives will make reading more interesting.
Thirdly, through reading online, I can share my favorite books with my friends easily. If you choose online reading, you will find that there is always a little bottom somewhere on the page, which allows you to share the book with several friends at the same time. It doesn’t matter whether your friends are from the same city or not. He or she will receive a message from you when online. This is an advantage that traditional reading can’t have. How can you lend your books to several friends at the same time? You can’t. How can you lend your book to a friend who lives in another city? You can’t either. It is online reading that makes reading without limits on time and place.
Last but not least. Online reading makes information more available. It is obvious that most information we got from traditional books is a little bit old and behind the times. I don’t deny the fact that we people do need to read many classics to improve ourselves. But most time, especially in today’s modern society, I am more eager to know what is happening around me. I want to know more details about the explosion happened in Nanjing. I am also concerned about the natural disasters in Zhouqu, Gansu province. Yes, these messages will appear on the daily newspaper, but why do you prefer waiting a whole day instead of reading current affairs online? Here is my point that online reading allows me to get the latest news and information so that more information is available to me.
If you’re still complaining about your heavy books, why not take full use of your cell phones and laptops? Let’s enjoy reading online together.
That is all. Thank you for listening.
