  編者按:外國朋友來到中國生活,一定要了解中國的折扣,一出門就能看到各種八折七折的商品,你知道這個折扣是什么意思嗎?一起來看一看英語怎么解釋中國折扣吧。

Everybody loves a good sale and, thankfully, November, 11th, a online-shopping day falls on this Saturday. Sale signs in China are indicated by 折 (zhé) with the meaning of "discount". The word used in the daily, 打折 (dǎzhé), which, funnily enough in literally, "hit the discount", means to “give a discount”. Obviously, 打折 (dǎzhé) is going to be the favorite Chinese word for this shopping day.

But be cautious! Chinese discounts work in completely the opposite fashion to western discounts. While a western shopper sees 90 percent off, a Chinese shopper sees that you pay 90 percent of the price. That means 9折(9zhé) is actually only 10 percent off. For example, if you see a banner with 7折(7zhé), do not get too exited because it is not 70 percent off, just 30.

Yes, that’s a little complicated. So, let’s break it down.

Here’s an example of online-sale prices.

Percent discounts from left to right, top to bottom: 76%, 73%, 73%, 50%, 80%,69%

Look at the blue striped sweater in the first picture. It says 2.4折(2.4zhé),this means you just pay 24% of the original price, i.e. a whopping 76 percent discount. That’s a pretty good deal!

Also, watch out for 折起 (zhé qǐ). This means that the discount is up to a certain amount. For example, 3折起(3 zhé qǐ) means up to 70% off.

  Good luck shopping!
