Twelve, for me, was a hard year. I moved to a new town with my father after my mother died. I was terribly lonely and would cry myself to sleep each night. To cheer me up, my father bought an old horse for me. I named him Knight.

Knight was not a handsome one. But I didn’t care. I loved him for no reason. I joined a riding club, but people all laughed at Knight’s looks. The other members rode beautiful horses. I never told others about how I felt.

When Knight and I entered the events about appearance, we were quickly shown the gate. Nothing could turn Knight into a beauty. I had to be in the speed events. I chose the jumping race.

One girl named Joyce rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons (藍絲帶). Of course, she didn’t feel threatened (威脅) when I was in. She always thought she was the best and looked down on others. That made me decide to beat her though it would be my first race.

For the whole next month I woke up early every day and rode Knight five miles to the arena (賽馬場). We practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun.

Our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate while I watched Joyce and her horse run fast and finish in first place.

My turn finally came. We ran to the first fence (障礙物) and jumped it without trouble. Knight then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him towards the finishing line.

As we crossed the finishing line, the crowd was shocked into silence. Knight and I had beaten Joyce and her beautiful horse by two seconds!

I got much more than a blue ribbon that day. At twelve, I realized that I can be a winner if I want something very much and work hard for it.

  A. He was a rider without experience.

  B. He did not practice enough.

  C. He believed he wasn’t popular with the crowd.

  D. He thought his horse wasn’t as good as the others.

  36. When the final race finished, nobody cheered because ______________.

  A. the audience didn’t like Knight B. they were all impatient

  C. the writer had run out of time D. the win was unexpected

  37. The best title for the story is _____________.

Life is a series of good and bad things, big and small. If I remember all the bad things right from my childhood, wouldn’t it be silly? Such as, one of my parents who hit me when I was young, the pre-school kid who wouldn’t share her red ink with me, the third-grader who would keep pulling my hair, or the stranger at the bus stop who wouldn’t let me get on the bus first …It’s terrible to remember all those unwanted memories. Thank God for our fading (衰退的) memories.

If we always remember everything that we've ever read or experienced, we would not only be walking encyclopedias (百科全書), but also be the unhappiest humans on the earth, because we would also remember the moments that someone shouted at us or hit us deeply. Imagine, what would happen to us if we carry this huge load of feelings in our body bags? With the weight that we carry around, we would be pulled down into the deep hole of negative (消極的) thought and couldn't go out. If we learn to let go of all the negative thoughts or the unwanted memories, life would be much more enjoyable.

Life is like an apple. If offers us the choice of the good part and the core (核) that we can't eat. Have we worried about throwing away the core, even for a moment? Of course NO. Then, why do we hold on to all those unpleasant memories and not to sweep them away? Don't you want to eat the juicy and tasty part? Will you eat the hard core instead?

It's up to you children to choose for yourself. There's no doubt that you should choose to let go of the core or enjoy the flesh of the apple of life to the fullest.

It’s a big challenge for you to complete any personal goal in time. And it always seems that you won’t have enough time to finish all you need to do. Do you know the way to make the time for your goal? Here are some tips which may help you.

Focus on(集中) one thing at a time. Remember not to take on too many goals at a time, or your energy will be used up soon. Once one goal is finished, you can go to the next one. Set up at least a month per goal.

Prioritize(優(yōu)先處理)the most important. We have more than one thing to complete. If we put all the things before our Goal, we won’t ever find the time for it. If we put our goal at the first place, we’ll make the time.

Keep your goal simple. It’s important not to make your goal too difficult. If you want to be slim, for example, you just need to develop the habit for your health, walking each day (or running, or cycling etc), drinking more water, eating fruits and vegetables instead of junk snacks.

Shut your door. Try to set a time that you won’t be disturbed (打擾). If you are disturbed from time to time, you really don't have the time to help out. So you must shut your door when working on the most important tasks. If so, you will get them done better.

Stop wasting time. In our daily life, there are many things wasting your time, such as watching drama series and going to bars. If you don’t do them, it won’t make a great difference to your life. So stop doing them to free up time for your goals.

If you follow the above, you will succeed to achieve your goal
