  When my friend Dorothy goes home to visit her family each Thanksgiving, her mother serves the traditional “mistake salad”. The dish was born many years ago, Dorothy explains, when mother was using a cookbook to make a salad. In the process, by mistake, mother included half the salad ingredients (原料) from a recipe (食譜) on the left side of the open cookbook, and half the ingredients from a different salad recipe on the opposite page.   When it comes to generation gap (代溝), we usually think of different tastes in music, or pastimes. But now the generation gap is handwriting. After one teacher in Tennessee discovered that she had students who couldn’t read what she was writing on the board, she posted it on the Internet saying that handwriting should be taught in schools.

  Others who are against it claim that handwriting has become out of time in our modern world. Typed words have become a main form of communication. Once a practical skill, handwriting is no longer used by most of Americans. It is no longer taught in schools, and some claim that the time that it would take to teach it could be put to better use, for example, by teaching the technical skills.

  But even in today’s world there are still plenty of reasons to pick up a pen and write on the paper. In America, signatures (簽字) by hand are still often required, for example, signing for a registered letter and buying a house. And original signatures are much more difficult to fake (偽造).

  There is also strong evidence that writing by hand is good for the mind. It makes a different part of the brain active and improves fine moving skills in young children. Not only those, studies have shown that kids who write by hand learn to read and spell earlier than those who don’t.

  One second-grade student wanted to help erase school lunch debt for her fellow students, so she decided to create lemonade stands to raise funds(資金).

  Amiah Van Hill was inspired to raise funds to help pay off her classmates’ lunch debt back in May after reading about Jeffery Lew. The father of three crowd-funded to cover the cost of unpaid lunches in the Seattle School District, where his 8-year-old son took part. “She’s a really strong reader, so she read the story and said, ‘Wow, this is great! I wonder if there's any kids at my school that need help paying their lunches,’” said her mother ,Rachel Van Hill.

  Amiah, 6, and Aria, 4, discovered that at Hayden Meadows Elementary School in Idaho, the unpaid lunch debt was $40.55. They set up a lemonade stand last month to raise the money, with a sign reading, “Lemonade 4 Lunch.” During their first set-up, the two met their goal within an hour.

  The school was very much appreciative. Principal Lisa Pica said “Our school believes in giving back to the community and we are excited that Amiah has got that value at such a young age and we are so proud that she has found a way to help those in need. She is a very special little lady.”

  After discovering it was “easy” to pay off one school’s debt, they set up another lemonade stand a week later to raise money for two more local schools.   I study English literature at university and have always ben proud of Britain’s literary heritage(文學(xué)遺產(chǎn)).   A new study suggests that people who drank a certain amount of alcohol(酒)had a lower risk of cancer and death than those who drank more or none during a nine-year period. And with each additional drink a week, the risk of cancer and death from any cause increased, the scientists reported.

  However, the study found only an association between alcohol and cancer and death, and did not prove cause and effect, the researches said. What sets the new study apart, said lead study author Andrew Kunzmann, is that previous studies looked at cancer and death separately. “What our study does is combine the two outcomes together and we find that lighter drinking is associated with the lowest risk of cancer or death,” Kunzmann said.

  But Kunzmann noted that the participants(參與者)were all older adults. That means that “we’re not really showing what happens in younger people if they drink,” he said. Also, it’s difficult to account for other lifestyles that could have affected the results. “These could also influence health.   Sweetie is a big dog who spends every Friday of the month in the Children’s Area of our local library. Earlier today, I was so lucky to be nearby when she was partnering with a boy who was reading mystery of Magic Tree House. Every time Sweetie listened to the boy reading the most challenging words, she would softly lick (舔) his hand which was holding the book.   On Monday, April 17, 2017, a unique partnership between Saint Agatha and Phalanx Family Services began. Saint Agatha is a primary school and day care program. Phalanx Family Services is a full-service, nonprofit (非盈利的) organization offering various programming for in-need families living in Chicago.

  As any person suffering from lack of sleep knows, dark circles under the eyes usually stand out after a bad night’s sleep.

  But why do people get these dark eye bags? The answer is both genetic (that is, relating to your DNA) and environmental (a result of your everyday living, such as rubbing your eyes or getting too little sleep), said Dr. Carol Clinton, a skin-care researcher in Dublin, Ohio.

  But “the biggest reason is genes.” Clinton told Live Science. Eye bags are generally more noticeable in people who, because of genes, have thin or pale skin. When people are tired or very nervous, blood circulation in the eye area becomes slow, allowing blood to pool there. Clinton said.
