Once there was a piano player in a bar(酒吧). People came just to hear him play. But one night, a lady asked him to sing a song.
“I don’t sing.” said the man.
But the lady told the waiter, "I'm tired of listening to the piano. I want the player to sing!
The waiter shouted across the room, "Hey, friend! If you want to get paid, sing a song!'
So he did. He had never sung in public before. Now he was singing for the very first time! Nobody had ever heard the song Mona Lisa sung so beautifully!
He had talent(天賦) he was sitting on! He may have lived the rest of his life as a no-name piano player in a no-name bar. But once he found, by accident, that he could sing well, he went on working hard and became one of the best-known singers in the US. His name was Nat King Cole.

For thousands of years, we have looked for ways to measure(測量) time. Early humans found that the regular movements of the sun, the earth, the moon, and the stars made good ways to measure time. The rising and setting of the sun were used to tell day from night.
But, in the end, people needed to tell time more exactly. So, by using the sun’s position in the sky, they divided the day into dawn(黎明), morning, midday and evening.
Then it was noted that sun threw a changing shadow(陰影) as it moved across the sky. Time could be told more exactly by setting up a stick and marking the positions of the sun’s shadow. It was the ancient Greeks(古希臘人)who divided each position of this “sundial(日晷)”into hours.
But the sun doesn’t always shine. So, for the past 6,000 years, many other ways of keeping time have been tried. Slow-burning candles were divided into hours, and the hour-glass was invented. When all the sand in the top of an hour-glass has gone through to the bottom, an hour has passed.
L ater, the pendulum(鐘擺), with its regular back-and-forth movement of weights, was used to move the hands on a clock. Pendulums are still used in grandfather clocks.
Today, even more exact(精密的) clocks are in use, such as battery-operated quartz clocks, digital clocks, and clocks run by electrical turning forks and tiny atoms. These atomic(自動的) clocks are the most exact clocks ever invented. The exact time can be kept to within 1 second a century.

When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺點(diǎn)). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly. Then he asked, “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other thi ngs she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”
Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.
