he plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport all morning. They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamonds from South Africa. A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds. When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried it into the Customs House. While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel. To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of stones and sand!
飛機誤點了，偵探們在機場等了整整一上午。他們正期待從南非來的一個裝著鉆石的貴重包裹。數(shù)小時以前，有人向警方報告，說有人企圖偷走這些鉆石。當(dāng)飛機到達(dá)時，一些偵探等候在主樓內(nèi)，另一些偵探則守候在停機坪上。有兩個人把包裹拿下飛機，進(jìn)了海關(guān)。這時兩個偵探把住門口，另外兩個偵探打開了包裹。令他們吃驚的是，那珍貴的包裹里面裝的全是石頭和沙子!

It was 9 pm, detective Brown was reading a book at home. Suddenly, the power was broken. 晚上九點，布朗偵探正在家里看書，忽然停電了。
Five minutes later, there was a loud noise. Then, a near house was exploded and burned. Detective Brown ran to the scene at once. 五分鐘之后，突然一聲巨響。而后，不遠(yuǎn)處的一間房子爆炸著火了。布朗偵探連忙向現(xiàn)場跑去。
The owner of this house was an old woman. She was very sad and said to the detective:“Fortunately, I was buying something in a shop, otherwise…”這幢房子的主人是一位老婦人。她非常傷心，對布朗偵探說：“幸虧當(dāng)時我去商店買東西，要不然……”
There was a smell of gas at the scene. The detective said: “The explosion should be caused by the gas leakage.”現(xiàn)場能聞到煤氣的味道。偵探說：“應(yīng)該是您家里的煤氣泄漏引起的爆炸。”
At this time, one police reported: “The fire started burning from the bedroom.” 這時候，一個警察報告說：“火是從老婦人的臥室燒起來的。”
The old woman said: “But in my bedroom, there was just a bed, a phone and abox.”老婦人說：“但是我的臥室里只有一張床、一部電話和一個箱子。”

The police founded out that the old woman’s nephew Roy was the suspect(嫌疑犯). Because the old woman had a lot of jewellery and had them insured. The beneficiary(受益人) was Roy. 警方發(fā)現(xiàn)老婦人的侄兒羅伊是嫌疑犯。老婦人有許多寶石，并且都投了保險，指明受益人就是羅伊。
But Roy was not on the scene when the explosion happened. It could be proved that he was in the hotel which was 10km away.可事發(fā)時羅伊不在現(xiàn)場，而且可以證明他當(dāng)時在距離現(xiàn)場10公里外的旅館里。
The detective asked：“Did Roy go to the old woman’s house that night?” “Yes. He finished his supper and left on half past eight o’clock，”a police answered.偵探說：“那天晚上，羅伊去過老婦人的家嗎?”“是的。他吃完晚飯后八點半離開了老婦人的家。”一個警察回答說。
Detective Brown thought about a few minutes and said: “It was made by Roy.”布朗偵探思考了一下說：“這起事件就是羅伊制造的。”
